If you have a pet, they likely bring so much joy to your life. They are there to give you comfort when you need it the most. However, they can also introduce pesky fleas into your home. Once fleas invade your home, it can be difficult to get rid of them without giving your pet flea medication and calling in an exterminator. Here are three signs that you have a flea infestation in your home.

1. You have seen a flea on your clothes or skin.

If you have seen a flea on you while you are in your home, you likely have a big flea infestation. Fleas reproduce very quickly. A single female flea lays around 20 eggs at a time and can lay around 40 of them a day.

Once the flea larvae hatches and matures, they are able to reproduce a few days later. Given how many eggs female fleas can lay each day, it is not difficult to see how that one flea can be indicative of a flea problem in your home.

2. You notice little, red bites on your skin.

The unfortunate thing about fleas is they have no real way to differentiate between you and your pet. So, if any land on your skin, they will likely bite you because they are wanting to feed.

Flea bites are small, red, and usually extremely itchy. You will see them more on your lower legs than anywhere else because the fleas usually jump on them as you are walking through your house. If you notice that you have quite a few small, red bites on your lower legs, you definitely need to call an exterminator to come in and take care of your flea infestation.

3. You see a substance that looks like black pepper on your pet's skin.

Another telltale sign that your pet has brought a flea infestation in your home is if you see a lot of debris that looks like black pepper on their skin. This is called flea dirt. Basically, flea dirt is flea poop that is comprised mostly of the blood the flea has ingested.

So, if you see a lot of flea dirt on your pet's skin and matted in their fur, that means there are a lot of fleas around — even if you haven't seen many or any at all.

The best way to get rid of the flea dirt is to give your pet a bath using flea shampoo, then you need to be sure to give them flea treatment.
